Buccleuch fishery staff have been removing some of the willow bushes from parts of low liddle to allow easier access to high water lies when wading is not possible. Winter maintenance is now underway. Todd holes on Langholm beat has been denuded of the large area of scrub bushes which had appeared in recent years, to make it easier for the fly. Trees washed out in winter floods are also being dealt with together with routine pruning back of overhanging branches along the beats.

The vast majority of sea trout kelts appear to have got away quite nicely after spawning without too much mortality. Around Christmas, Salmon have their turn. Given the run of fish during and after the rod season, with the constant high running water it should provide good egg deposition for future stocks.
Anglers in the tidal Metal Bridge area will be pleased to know that work on the new motorway bridge has now been completed , hopefully restoring the tranquility to their fishing for 2009.
Best wishes for Christmas and 2009.
